Locate a South Carolina booking photograph by its jail or corrections record, and use Greenville’s published photo-request fees without applying them statewide.
Start with the agency that made the photograph
For a recent South Carolina arrest, start with the county detention center or arresting agency and the approximate booking date. A county booking photograph and a later state-prison photograph can come from different events. Write down the full name, county, date and any booking number before looking for an image; keep separate references when the person has more than one booking.
Greenville County’s official inmate inquiry is a practical local starting point, not a statewide mugshot directory. Use its disclaimer page to reach the inquiry and retain the matching booking information. Greenville warns that the displayed status can change quickly and that most inmates are awaiting trial. An arrest photograph is not a finding of guilt.
Know what SCDC’s photograph search excludes
The South Carolina Department of Corrections search displays photographs and public information for people currently sentenced to and incarcerated in SCDC, as of midnight the previous day. It excludes people released from SCDC, county detention populations, parole or probation supervision, juvenile offenders, and current SCDC fugitives. A missing name therefore cannot rule out a local booking or an older prison stay.
Follow the incarcerated-inmate search link from SCDC’s disclaimer. Compare the returned identifiers and custody information with the event you are researching instead of relying on facial resemblance alone. For an SCDC data discrepancy, the agency gives [email protected]; its inmate information line is 1-866-727-2846. Use those channels to resolve the displayed record’s status.
Ask Greenville for the image in the format you need
Greenville’s published fees distinguish four products: a black-and-white mugshot is $3, a color mugshot is $6, an electronic booking jail record is $3 per record, and a paper inmate booking report is $6 per report. Request the photograph explicitly. Ordering an electronic booking record does not establish that you ordered a color photograph or a certified court disposition.
The county’s Public Safety Records Management Services Division handles records for the Sheriff, Greenville City Police and the county detention center. Complete the FOIA request form linked on its Public Records page and email it to [email protected]. Describe the person and booking event, desired photograph and format, and your return contact. The office says applicable fees may need advance payment depending on search scope.
Keep local prices and release decisions local
The Greenville amounts apply to Greenville’s listed services. For a booking elsewhere in South Carolina, use that county’s official detention or sheriff website to find its records custodian. Give the known jail, arresting agency and event date, and ask for the existing booking photograph. If the jail only holds a transfer record, ask which agency retains the original booking image.
A records request may produce a redacted record, a release restriction or a statement that the office does not hold the image. Ask which explanation applies. South Carolina FOIA contains exemptions, so public access to a custody listing is not a guarantee of access to every associated photograph or attachment. Do not infer a uniform statewide photo price or promise that personal involvement overrides a restriction.
Track the response and any deposit
For a written South Carolina FOIA request, the determination deadline is normally ten days excluding weekends and legal public holidays; it is twenty such days for records more than 24 months old. If granted, production is generally due within 30 calendar days after the determination, or 35 for the older records. These are distinct stages, not a promise that a photo will arrive the day the request is acknowledged.
The statute allows a deposit of up to 25 percent of reasonably anticipated production costs. When a deposit is required, the production period runs from receipt of that deposit; the parties can agree in writing to extend the periods. Save the request, determination and payment instructions together, and obtain clarification before paying for a broader search than the specific booking you need.
Check the event and the court outcome separately
Match a supplied image to the booking date and reference, then keep the agency’s response with the file. If you need to show how the charge ended, obtain the disposition from the court handling that case. A jail roster or photograph can preserve an arrest event even when a later court result is different; using the image alone can give a misleading account.
If the wrong person or wrong booking was supplied, return the identifying mismatch to the custodian and request the correct record. Greenville disclaims accuracy and timeliness of the online inquiry, so use agency confirmation for consequential decisions. No match after a single name search should be described as a complete South Carolina criminal-history clearance.
